How do you take your coffee—with a little cream? How about a splash of generosity? Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) is inviting everyone to its annual “Coffee for a Cause” event on Giving Tuesday, December 3, and it’s as heartwarming as it sounds.

Members of the community are invited to swing by the college campus to grab a free coffee and some breakfast treats and consider donating to help support scholarships and programs that help STCC students chase their dreams.

Brian Touhey, a 30-year member of STCC’s Foundation Board, had this to say; “We have all heard that Massachusetts has made community college free and that is true for tuition and books. But our students are not the children of privilege so they still have substantial needs. Whether it’s food for their families, technology for their classes, or simply childcare for their young ones, they need our support in these areas to even attend STCC.”

When and where?

This event is happening on December 3, 2023, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Student Learning Commons (Building 19) or at Building 15 on the STCC campus.

You can also skip the coffee and donate online here.

Why should you go?

Giving Tuesday, celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is all about global generosity. STCC is taking the opportunity to rally the community around its students. The event will offer complimentary coffee and breakfast bites, while also sharing stories of how donor support changes lives at STCC. Finally, STCC is a pillar institution in Western MA. It has supported thousands of students since its founding in 1967.

How you can help

Guests are encouraged to make contributions to support STCC Foundation scholarships and programs, which provide financial assistance to students and enhance educational opportunities. Donations can be made on-site or online through the STCC Foundation donation page.

Who’s invited?

Those who love coffee and those who don’t. Whether you’re an STCC alum, community member, or just in the neighborhood, this is a great chance to connect, contribute, and be caffeinated (or to just smell the coffee as you drive by and drop some dollars).

Why it matters

STCC plays a significant role in the Springfield community, especially for students who may be the first in their families to attend college. Many students continue to struggle with the costs of food, technology, and other essentials necessary for their academic success.

The college recently saw a jump in enrollment due to the newly introduced MassReconnect program, alluded to by Touhey above. The program offers free community college tuition for Massachusetts residents who are 25 and over.

So, set your calendar reminders, grab your coat, and head over to STCC to make a difference.
