GREENFIELD, MA – Nearly a year after a theft damaged its iconic Money Tree, Greenfield Savings Bank has officially reopened the landmark at 235 Mohawk Trail with a fully refurbished sculpture and a brand-new ITM, short for Interactive Teller Machine.
Yup, ATM is out. ITM is in. The bank is using this moment not just to refresh its landmark, but also to teach customers a new bit of banking jargon. The new ITM offers live teller support, video assistance, and accessibility upgrades, all the things your old ATM wishes it could do.
Originally installed in 2008, the 25-foot Money Tree was created by local artist Thor Holbek as a fusion of public art and practical banking. Its trunk once housed a drive-up ATM, making it both a functional banking stop and a quirky roadside attraction.
That changed in December 2024, when thieves vandalized the ATM during a robbery. The incident prompted Greenfield Savings Bank to take the tree offline and launch a comprehensive security and infrastructure review.
Now, after nearly a year of restoration, the Money Tree has returned with new features:
- A state-of-the-art ITM positioned adjacent to the tree, offering live teller support, improved accessibility, and advanced security safeguards.
- A redesigned sculpture by Holbek, featuring a decorative door where the ATM once stood, refreshed paintwork, upgraded lighting, and new landscaping to improve safety and visibility.

“The Money Tree has become an iconic part of Greenfield, a symbol of local pride and creativity,” said Tom Meshako, President of Greenfield Savings Bank. “It is a familiar landmark in our community, now updated to better serve our customers with greater security and accessibility.”
Security upgrades include enhanced surveillance, tamper detection systems, and remote monitoring. “We have taken every measure to ensure that this landmark is not only beautiful, but also secure,” said Jim Loynd, VP of Security at Greenfield Savings Bank.
The project was a collaboration between the bank, Holbek, and local law enforcement. Greenfield Savings Bank expressed gratitude to the Greenfield Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and other partners for their diligence in investigating the 2024 crime and helping restore customer confidence.
For Greenfield residents, the return of the Money Tree means more than just an updated machine. It marks the revival of a community landmark that has blended art, banking, and local identity for nearly two decades. And now, thanks to Greenfield Savings Bank, everyone gets to add a shiny new acronym to their vocabulary.
